Throughout his academic career Robert Crouse has insisted that the patristic and medieval philosophical and theological traditions, which have so profoundly shaped western culture, cannot be understood apart from the subtle and complex dialogue between Christianity and Hellenic culture out of which these traditions emerged. In this volume in Father Crouse’s honour, twenty-two eminent scholars from across North America and Europe examine various moments within the emergence of the doctrine of creation in the patristic and medieval periods, the Hebraic and Hellenic pre-history of this movement, as well as modern reactions to the partristic and medieval syntheses. Je crois en Dieu, le Père tout-puissant, Créateur du ciel et de la terre. " - Quelle est la signification de la foi chrétienne dans la création que nous professons dans le Credo et quelle vérité énonce-t-elle ? Que dit-elle de Dieu, du monde, de l'homme devant Dieu et dans le monde ? Pour répondre à ces questions, Medard Kehl propose un grand parcours qui, dans un premier temps, déploie cette foi telle qu'elle s'exprime notamment dans la liturgie de la vigile pascale, dans la quatrième prière eucharistique et dans le Credo. Après une remontée jusqu'aux témoignages fondateurs des Ecritures, Ancien et Nouveau Testament, il se livre à quatre " sondages historiques qui montrent comment la foi dans la création a été pensée et présentée par quatre grands théologiens à différents moments de l'histoire et dans différentes conjonctures : Irénée (confrontation avec la gnose), Augustin (réception de la philosophie néo-platonicienne), Thomas d'Aquin (foi et raison) et R. Guardini (questions soulevées par la modernité). Suivent des chapitres consacrés à quelques grandes questions : Dieu est-il toujours présent et agissant dans le monde ? Comment concilier un Dieu créateur tout-puissant et bon et le mal dans le monde ? Comment la foi chrétienne dans la création se situe-t-elle par rapport à l'explication du monde par les sciences de la nature, et qu'apporte-t-elle de " plus " ? Comment cette foi peut-elle contribuer à une éthique écologique ? Fruit d'un enseignement donné pendant de nombreuses années à la faculté de théologie de Francfort-sur-le-Main, l'ouvrage de Medard Kehl est tout à la fois clair, informé (en particulier sur les débats scientifiques), rigoureux, n'évitant aucune question.
